Tapologo

Tapologo is a full-length documentary shot in Northwest Province, South Africa. Directors Gabriella and Sally Gutierrez Dewar chronicle a handful of the 20,000 displaced African refugees in a squatter camp called Freedom Park. Here we are exposed to life and death in a place where fifty percent of the women are infected with HIV.

The film is divided into two parts. Part one opens inside the shack of an emaciated woman receiving care from two local nurses. The woman is dying from Tuberculosis, and for a moment she glances directly into the camera lens with brown eyes that appear to have lost all innocence and hope. As we get to know other patients and nurses who inhabit the park, we see that most of the women have slept with men for money, many have contracted HIV, yet only some are receiving anti-retroviral treatment. All of them are either dying or fighting to survive. Personal accounts from the women are interlaced with stunning visual images that are both emotional and relevant, and the intensity never lets up.

The second part begins with desolate music by Joel Assaizky and shots of people walking across train tracks, sitting on sides of roads, just standing around watching each other. This time is spent contextualizing the squalor of Freedom Park in the apartheid aftermath. In a place where the alternative to starvation is sexual exploitation, it’s impossible to ignore the political history.

Then we learn about Tapologo, a collective of female caregivers who self-organize and treat the hopelessness of their immediate surroundings. Before this network existed, individuals were left alone with their chronic diseases as poverty and pain devoured them. Now these strong women, many of them diagnosed with HIV themselves, have begun to administer anti-retroviral treatment and provide bedside and hospice care. As a result, a community has begun to form, and with the help of Brother Joe, Sister Georgina, and bishop Kevin Dowling (Catholic community leaders and activists who share relatively progressive ideology), Tapologo has begun to break Freedom Park's cycle of poverty, patriarchy and an overall loss of dignity.

One scene in particular illustrates the spirit of this film. A nurse named Thembi (a former sex-worker and HIV victim) pays a visit to the shack of a helpless woman and her infant. She says confidently, "Filth can make the illness worse," and begins to wash dishes and floors on her hands and knees. For Thembi and others, volunteering with Tapologo gave them a chance to believe in themselves, to find beauty within, and to be proud of life's small victories. This moment, and this film, is a great reminder to step out of our daily comforts and confront real issues facing real women.

The focus of Tapologo's equally enraged lens is the manner in which deeply ingrained patriarchal attitudes drive South Africa's HIV pandemic. Filmmakers Gabriela and Sally Gutiérrez Dewar peer into the wounded heart of a region where 50 percent of women are infected with HIV and a courageous network known as Tapologo tries to bring dignity to lives that have known none. The pain these women feel as their bodies increasingly betray them is brutal, but what lingers most is the documentary's stinging indictment of the Catholic Church's stance on AIDS and sexuality, ironically communicated via the heartache and fury felt by one of the church's foot soldiers: a bishop working closely with Tapologo.

A moving story of women in South Africa who have turned their tragedy into a tool.

The impact of South Africa’s unprecedented mining boom on the labour camps that support the industry is told through the brutal realities facing women in these communities. Freedom Park squatter camp, situated in the Northwest province, accommodates a migrant workforce that mines the world’s largest single source of platinum. The women in this community service the needs of the male miners as a means of basic survival. A group of HIV-infected former sex-workers have created a network called Tapologo and have learnt to be home-based care-workers, transforming degradation into solidarity and squalor into hope. As we learn each woman’s story, we come to understand how she herself was transformed—from someone who had lost hope into someone who decided to help others in the same situation. An inspiring and emotional tale, TAPOLOGO shows how one’s own experience is often the best source of help for others.

La producción española Tapólogo, de Gabriela y Sally Gutiérrez Dewar, ha sido la ganadora del Gran Premio del X Festival Internacional de Cine Documental "Santiago Alvarez in Memoriam", celebrado en Santiago de Cuba del 8 al 13 de marzo.

Competían este año en el certamen cubano, que toma su nombre de un prestigioso documentalista, 26 obras de distintos países. TAPOLOGO, España/Sudáfrica, 2008, (88´) está dirigido por las hermanas Gabriela y Sally Gutiérrez Dewar, productora y realizadora la primera, artista visual la segunda, teniendo como denominador común su colaboración con el movimiento internacional anti-Apartheid a finales de los años ochenta. En 1992 viajaron a Sudáfrica para experimentar la nueva realidad política del país, y conocieron a líderes de la talla de Walter Sisulu o el obispo católico Kevin Dowling, con quien surgió una relación que continúa hasta la actualidad cuya muestra es su valiosa colaboración en este documental.

Tras la proyección, tendrá lugar un encuentro de las directoras con el público asistente.

Noche de premios en MiradasDoc

’Radio La Colifata’ y ’The not dead’ comparten el primer premio de Mejor Documental Internacional, en el festival de cine documental Miradasdoc.

Para el premio al Mejor Documental Español, el jurado ha elegido a ’Tapólogo’, una película de las hermanas Gabriela y Sally Gutiérrez. Según el fallo, "retrata de frente a mujeres en situación extrema. Sus valientes testimonios nos obligan a no olvidarlas".

EL DÍA, Guía de Isora

La película argentina "LT22 Radio La Colifata", de Carlos Larrondo, y la cinta británica "The not dead", de Brian Hill, comparten este año el primer premio al largometraje documental internacional del MiradasDoc 2008, dotado con 10.000 euros. El fallo del jurado se hizo público en el transcurso de la gala de clausura del festival, que se inició a las 20:00 horas en el Auditorio municipal de Guía de Isora.

Dentro también de la categoría internacional, el premio al mejor cortometraje fue para la película "Rough Cut", de la cineasta iraní Firouzeh Khosrovani, mientras que la mención especial se repartió entre las películas "Shit and Chicks", del holandés Kees van der Geest, y "Under construction", del realizador chino Zhenchen Liu.

Para el premio al mejor documental español, el jurado ha elegido a "Tapólogo", una película de las hermanas Gabriela y Sally Gutiérrez. Según el fallo, "retrata de frente a mujeres en situación extrema. Sus valientes testimonios nos obligan a no olvidarlas". Por su parte, la mención especial del concurso nacional ha correspondido a "Por mis hijos", de Aymée Cruzalegui.

En el apartado de Ópera Prima, el premio ha recaído en "Stone Silence", del polaco Krzysztof Kopczynski, al tiempo que la película "Celia the Queen", basada en la vida de la cantante cubana Celia Cruz y dirigida por Joe Cardona y Mario de Varona, recibió el Premio Canal Plus.

Por su parte, el jurado del concurso Canarias otorgó su premio al documental "En el ala del sueño. Juan Ismael", del realizador Miguel G. Morales, "por su labor de rescate de la vida y la obra del artista surrealista canario Juan Ismael".

La novedad de esta tercera edición, el premio IsoraDoc, que se otorga al mejor proyecto documental presentado por un colectivo social del municipio, ha ido a parar a un grupo de jóvenes del núcleo de Chío y su propuesta para realizar el documental "Chío: ¿ruedas o tablas?", distinción que le fue concedida "por el gran potencial visual que ofrece la tradición popular de la bajada de los carros de San Andrés, tradición de gran valor etnográfico".

Los galardones MiradasDoc se completan con el Premio del Público. Los asistentes a las proyecciones han elegido a "One goal", del director catalán Sergi Agusti.

Satisfacción

El III Festival de Cine Documental de Guía de Isora ha ratificado el éxito de sus ediciones anteriores. De hecho, el alcalde isorano, Pedro Martín, no hizo ayer sino exponer públicamente lo que los expertos han ido señalando durante el desarrollo del certamen, que "ya podemos decir que se ha consolidado".

Las cifras reflejan el interés que tiene el sector por este festival: 800 trabajos presentados, 250 preseleccionados y 43 elegidos para participar en el concurso.

En esta ocasión, además, cabe resaltar el acercamiento de MiradasDoc al municipio con el establecimiento de un premio específico al que han optado seis colectivos isoranos que elaboraron documentales sobre temas relacionados con la historia y vida en Guía de Isora.

Una iniciativa, la que tuvo el obispo Kevin Dowling apostando por el uso del preservativo y creando, en 2005, una red para unir a decenas de mujeres del asentamiento chabolista sudafricano de Freedom Park en su combate diario contra el VIH y la pobreza, ha servido para que dos hermanas españolas, Sally y Gabriella Gutiérrez Dewar, hayan rodado Tapologo. El documental pudo verse este año en los festivales de Málaga y Tarifa.

Pregunta.– ¿Cuáles son los problemas que acechan a las mujeres de su documental?

Respuesta.– Al no haber recibido educación, tienen una dependencia total de los hombres. Acuden a zonas como ésta porque oyen que hay trabajo y acaban como prostitutas de los mineros.

P.– ¿Y qué les ha aportado la red de Rowling?

R.– Tapologo, que así se llama la iniciativa, es una solución integral, que les impulsa a asociarse y a tomar antirretrovirales. Gracias a ello empiezan a recuperar la autoestima, la dignidad y las ganas de vivir.

P.– ¿Cómo reaccionaron esas mujeres ante la presencia de una cámara?

R.– Éramos un equipo pequeño pero, aún así, ver a tres blancos en un campamento como ése... Era una relación de confianza que se basaba en la igualdad: las necesitabamos para entrar allí, porque son sitios peligrosos, y ellas querían contar su historia, ser escuchadas.

P.– ¿Confían en la capacidad del cine para crear conciencia social?

R.– Los documentales son portadores de cambio, aunque hay que ser muy cuidadoso con el lenguaje que se utiliza. Hemos huido de cualquier victimización de estas mujeres.

“STEPS” is the first international rights film festival, that takes place at the territory of Ukraine and CIS and at which the theme of right protection is represented within the extended circle of problems. The festival accepts the films devoted to human rights, animal and nature protection, and films of moral and social subjects, the films that illuminate the political problems.
The main aim of the festival is to draw the attention of the society to the prejudices and cruelty that dominate in the modern world, where the abjection of human rights is bound to the destruction of the surrounding living world. A lot of barbarian customs are often left unnoticed and become the norms of our life. That is why the works of the creative people from different countries will help the viewers to understand that everyone is responsible for everything that goes on around him They will help us to open eyes and look at our life laterally.

The film festival is eager to extend the boundaries of the right protection in order to direct the society towards the moral ideals and values. By means of cinema and video the independent producers, directors, script-writers and actors from all over the world will promote the right area to all layers of the society as well as build the “sensitive society for sensitive creatures”. The film festival “STEPS” will show the viewers the things they have never seen before but must see! The mankind must know this “inconvenient truth”.

We are delighted to inform you that the selection committee has decided to select the film Tapologo directed by you and Gabriela Gutierrez Dewar for the Tri-Continental Film Festival, New Delhi, India. The festival will kick off in Delhi on 15 January 2009 - 18 January 2009.

The film is also up for the Competitive Section. A jury that includes filmmakers, film critics, film scholars as well as artists judge's films selected for the festival. Tri Continental gives away two awards – Jury Award for Best Film and Jury Special Mention.

Tri Continental is a four-day festival that takes place in the venues of India Habitat Centre and Alliance Francaise Auditorium in New Delhi. There on it travels to Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata.

We are a Human Rights non-profit organisation (Breakthrough). Since our outreach is educational institutions, our audience is generally students and the youth, human rights activists and advocacy groups.

The Tri Continental began in Latin America in 2002, in Africa in 2003 and in Asia in 2004. In India, the Tri Continental began in 2005.

It is organised by Breakthrough, an international human rights organization that uses education and popular culture to promote values of dignity, equality and justice. During the course of the year, films from the Tri Continental are also screened at universities, cultural institutions, citizens groups as well as general audiences.

PRESS RELEASE: ANNOUNCEMENT OF AWARDS FOR THE 6TH ANNUAL TRI CONTINENTAL FILM FESTIVAL

After almost a month of cinema screenings across 4 cities, the 6th Annual Tri Continental Film Festival successfully concluded in Durban on the 11th of September 2008. This year’s festival reached new heights and continued to grow audiences for compelling cinema from the global South focussing on pressing human rights issues. Worthy of particular mention this year were the screenings of 9 short films completed over a two month period in the run up the festival’s opening in the mid-August, under the banner, Filmmakers Against Racism, commissioned by the Human Rights Media Trust examining the appalling xenophobic attacks that marred the South African landscape in May this year. These short films explored the motivation and social context behind these attacks, the lives of foreign nationals in the aftermath of these attacks, particularly under extremely harsh conditions in temporary refugee camps, the challenges of reintegration, and the inadequate response of public officials.

Each year the Tri Continental Film Festival runs an audience award for recognition of the festival’s outstanding film, outstanding South African film and outstanding short film. We wish to announce that 2008 Tri Continental Film Festival audience award for best film goes to Mick Davie’s The Choir. Filmed over 6 years, this inspirational documentary follows the life of young fellow Jabulani Shabangu as he joins the Leeukop prison choir thus beginning his journey towards self-redemption and eventual release from prison. Controversial and emotionally charged, Davie’s The Choir was embraced by South African audiences and is a worthy winner on this year’s audience award for outstanding film.

In the category best South African film, the audience award this year goes to Tapologo, a South African and Spanish co-production directed by Gabriela & Sally Gutierrez Dewar which explores the impact of South Africa’s mining boom on the labour camps that support the industry and the often brutal realities facing woman in these communities. Freedom Park squatter camp, situated in the Northwest province, accommodates a migrant workforce that mines the world’s single largest source of platinum, and the women in the community service the needs of the male miners as a means of basic survival. A group of HIV-infected former sex-workers have created a network called Tapologo, and have learnt to be home based care-workers transforming degradation into solidarity and hope. This rare film provides a humanising and honest lens to the courageous work of community activists working under desperate conditions.

In the category of best short film, audiences chose Okepne Ojang, Kyle O’Donoghue and Miki Redlinghuys’ humorous and compelling Congo My Foot. Created as part of the Filmmakers Against Racism series, this 24 minute piece tells the story of Tino La Musica, a Congolese band based in Cape Town that is displaced and evicted from their homes at the time of the xenophobic attacks this past May. As narrated by Ojang, an immigrant to South Africa from Cameroon, the film shows the trauma facing foreign nations as they seek to piece their lives together and find future direction in the fall out of the xenophobic attacks. Tino La Musica’s uplifting rhythms and ultimate reunion provide an inspiration backdrop to the ethnic tensions that continue to simmer throughout the nation.

The festival wishes to thank all the filmmakers and particularly South African audiences for their tremendous support over the past month of screenings.
